In 1887, the ‘Armenia White’ was launched; it was 101 feet long and held 650 passengers. It was the flagship of the Woodsum fleet and the biggest steamer ever to sail Lake Sunapee. This was the main transportation around the lake before roads for travel were cut in. You came up by train to Newbury where you switched modes of transportation to be dropped at any one of the many large public docks on Lake Sunapee.
This painting is an amazing capture of our lake history. Our gallery curator Ron Brown says this absolutely one of the best paintings he has ever seen. The detail is exquisite.
